Hi,
I visited Doune at the start of the season to help with the track clear up and also popped along to Kames to have a look at what an event was like. Initially I was planning on having a go in my Mx5 but some lovely person decided to steal it, so I am now without a car .
So this is another one of those "which car should I compete in threads" sorry about that. I do have some specific questions though, what category would an RX8 be able to run in? and does it count as a saloon car?
I read the blue book and I can't really find any definitions of what makes a saloon car, with most cars it's probably pretty obvious but the rx8 is a bit unusual.
Also it mentions that a rotary is counted as 1.5x the capacity so would that make an rx8 able to compete in the 1400cc to 2000cc bracket.
Thanks for your help
Ben. |

Ben.
Unless it is turbo charged, in which case you also need to apply the 1.4 forced induction factor on top of the 1,5 , pushing it into the "big" class. |

Welcome Ben.
My understanding of a saloon car is one that comes with back seats........................ with a 2 seater being a sports car. |

Hello Ben
Rx8's a 13B engine, a 1308cc capacity (546cc per rotor( 219cc per chamber x 3 face in one rotor)
with add from the MSA reg's 1.5.
1308x1.5=1962cc. without Forced induction
with forced induction, add 1.4 so it's make a 1.4x1.5x1308cc=2746cc
Mine's a 1986 RX7FC with 13B N/A engine and at this time its in the A8 Maqure road sport car class.
Hope it helps

Thanks everyone. I was only intending to get a standard 231 model, so it sounds like it will be in with class a2. Hope to see you guys out there.

The MSA definition of a saloon is listed as a Touring Car
Touring Car. Series Production cars of which at least
2,500 identical examples are, or have been
manufactured, within a twelve consecutive month
period and which are equipped with a minimum of four
adult size seats, an integral non-detachable roof, a
minimum of two doors, one on each side of the vehicle
and meet the dimensional requirements shown in
K Appendix 2, Drawing No. 61.
So providing the interior dimensions meet the requirements it should be OK |

Hi and welcome.
The RX8 is quite heavy and won't be competitve in either A2 or A6 (I think it might be a sports car) but they are nice cars. If yo want a Mazda, I'd personally go for a Mk2 MX-5 with an aftermarket supercharger. You'd be able to get a car with around 250bhp, weighing about 1000kg and eligible for class A8. It might even surprise the occasional lotus driver!
Whatever you get, have fun in it. |

I was kind of on the hunt for a rear wheel drive car that can seat 4 and still be competitive but your probably right about it being a bit heavy. It looks like it gives about 200kg's to 300kg's away to the clio's and integra's. Originally I thought an Rx7 would be the ticket but the back seats are pretty tiny. Might have to go the route of a cheap run about and a seperate fun car. Would a supercharged mx5 be able to run in A8? |

With it being the MSA, it is more complicated than that...
Section B in the Blue Book defines both 'Sports Cars and 'Touring Cars'. The MSA definition for a Sports Car excludes cars with more than two doors (one on each side), so the MX8 would appear to be a 'Touring Car' as it has four doors (I recall that there are two 'suicide doors' behind the main doors). The MSA definition goes on to say that the interior dimensions of a Sports Car must be less than that applicable to 'Touring Cars' (Section K, drawing 61). This is the rule that makes a Porsche 911 a 'Sports Car', even though it has four seats (admittedly pretty small seats in the back, but seats none the less).
I warned you it was complicated..... |
